In 2007 the doors of École du Bel-Air opened to 88 students in one of Port Au Prince’s poorest slums. The school was a refuge for the neighborhood’s children, a guarantee of safety and a warm meal, but above all a symbol of hope and promise amidst bullet-laden shanties. The children of Bel-Air have lived their lives in the shadow of abject poverty, political unrest, natural disasters, food shortages and gang violence. The Edeyo Foundation chose this, one of Haiti’s poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods, as the site for a school they hoped would give purpose to children whose futures were once nonexistent. Today the school, which had grown to support over 300 boys and girls, stands in ruins, devastated by last week’s earthquake. While the building was empty at the time the search continues for children, staff and their family members, many of whom are still missing or unaccounted for. ![]() |
